Developing web apps with only core php is an obsolete way?

Guys do you think for small companies developing web applications with only core php (php without frameworks) is actually an obsolete way to do it?
I am concerned from a security perspective when you're using frameworks you import so much code that you don't know, in my opinion it is a security exposure.

What do you think?

Can anyone recommend me a good framework to start?

Try Laravel it is pretty straightforward and has a large user community.
