No. Products can be in several category at same time, with category by default. Second variant without coding. Add TEG to chosen products something like "brand-favorite-set". And use search link to show page with chosen goods...

layout-both-columns.tpl different for different theme. Use your layout-both-columns.tpl it is way to broke the site :) U can yourself compare layout-both-columns.tpl in few theme.
