A robots.txt file is a text file that website owners create to instruct search engine crawlers on how to access and index their website's pages. It contains directives that tell search engine bots which pages or sections of the site should be crawled and indexed and which ones should be ignored.

In terms of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), the robots.txt file plays a crucial role in controlling how search engines interact with a website. By using the robots.txt file effectively, website owners can prevent search engines from indexing certain pages that they don't want to appear in search results, such as duplicate content, sensitive information, or pages with low-quality content. This can help improve the overall quality and relevance of a website's indexed pages, which can positively impact its SEO performance.

However, it's important to note that misconfiguring the robots.txt file can also have negative consequences on SEO. If important pages are blocked from being crawled and indexed, it can result in those pages not appearing in search results, leading to a decrease in organic traffic and visibility. Therefore, it's essential to carefully manage and update the robots.txt file to ensure that it aligns with the website's SEO goals and objectives.

It's not mandatory, when it's absent, a bot will index pages normally . One the other hand when you have it, the bot will only index what you needed. So it gives you more control over what is being crawled and indexed.
